Other Uses of Wikis in Education

Class 1 was about student use in a collaborative context, for both creative writing and for essays.

Class 2 was about sharing knowledge and resources with other educators.

Other Uses (feel free to add to this list!):

Portfolios
Communicating with parents
Class discussions
Assignment logs
Student compilations of research (they could make their own science/grammar/math text books)
Interactive digital storytelling (like a choose your own adventure book?)

Things to remember:

If you are doing something digitally that could just as easily be done without the electronics, you aren't really utilizing the technology well. It must IMPROVE your practice, if only to make something easier or less time consuming. Wikis provide for collaboration among those who could not meet in real-time.

Lack of student access to computers at home hinders the ability to complete digital assignments from home. I had to use the computer lab for weeks. Other teachers were mad!

You REALLY have to explain the following things to students: online behavior, collaboration, online safety, wikis, and whatever your assignment is about.

Your students will quickly figure out that wikispaces gives them an email account they can use to email other users on the wiki. You cannot access their emails unless you log in with their passwords. You cannot disable the mail. I treated this like I would passing notes/not focusing on assignments. Also, they need to know that if they click the button that sends the email to all the wiki members, that includes you and whoever else you've added to the wiki. Like the principal.
